Hispanic Actors in Hollywood

Some years ago it was very difficult for actors and actresses with Spanish and Latino American roots to get a decent role in Hollywood movies. Due to existing stereotype about Latino character the roles would reflect existing cultural biases and depict criminals or domestic servants. Fortunately, the things have changed and nowadays we have many beloved Hispanic actors who are successfully conquering Hollywood.

Some of them are so famous that they don’t even need a presentation. For example, Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz or Salma Hayek, who enliven the Hollywood movies with their outstanding appearance and beautiful Spanish accents.

But there are a number of actors and actresses with Spanish and Latino American roots in Hollywood. Some of them are more popular, some of them less. Some of them are starring in famous movies or TV series, but many people don’t know that they have Hispanic roots. Gael García Bernal is a Mexican film actor,director, and producer. He is mostly known for his performances in the films “Bad Education” (2004), “The Motorcycle Diaries” (2004), “Babel” (2006), “Letters to Juliet” (2010), and in  television series Mozart in the Jungle.


Selena  Gomez is an American actress and singer with Mexican roots. She actorrose to fame due to the leading role in the Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” (2007 – 2012). Her most famous works in film industry are “Another Cinderella Story” (2008), “Ramona and Beezus” (2010) and the romantic comedy “Monte Carlo” (2011).

Michelle Rodriguez
 is an American actress, screenwriter, and actorDJ whose mother is from Dominican Republic and father from Puerto Rico. Her breakout role was as a troubled boxer in the film “Girlfight” (2000). The following year, she starred as Letty Ortiz in the film “The Fast and the Furious” (2001) and the following sequels “Fast & Furious” (2009), “Fast & Furious 6” (2013), and “Furious 7” (2015). During her career, Rodriguez has played tough, independent women in a number of successful action films, comedies and television series. Rodrigo Santoro is a Brazilian actor. He has appeared in many actorsuccessful movies, including “Stuart Little” (1999, 2002), “Love Actually” (2003), “Che” (2008), “I Love You Phillip Morris” (2009), “Rio” (2011), “What to expect When you are Expecting” (2012) and many other. He is perhaps most famous for his portrayal of Xerxes in the movie “300” (2006) and its sequel “300: Rise of an Empire” (2014). He was starring in the television series “Lost”, and in HBO’s “Westworld” (2016).


There are definitely much more famous Hispanic actors in Hollywood who are starring in popular movies and television series than it is listed in this article. Spanish is the second most spoken language as a native language and the third as both, native and second language, in the world, thus the appearance of some simple phrases in Spanish language in movies or TV series shouldn’t be a surprise.
